Major Award Winners

Did you know that many of our children’s books have won major awards? From awards given by librarians to educators, every award is an honor to receive. The one that we are most proud of, however, is the Children’s Choices award co-sponsored by the International Reading Association and the Children’s Book Council. And two of our books have won this award!

The Children’s Choices award is unique because the winners are selected by the target audience, school-age children. Centers are established prior to the start of the award season, primarily in schools and/or libraries. Then, approximately 12,000 children are offered the various nominated books to read. They’re not required to read anything - it’s all up to them. They vote for their favorites, and then those votes are tabulated and the winners are announced.

The first book from Willow Bend Publishing to win the Children’s Choices award was Blackjack: Dreaming of a Morgan Horse. The award directly led to thousands of additional copies of the book being sold and led to a major toy company creating a model horse in Blackjack’s image and selling that model with a copy of the book. Blackjack is the first book in the Morgan Horse series, perfect for readers ages nine and up.

The following year, the sequel to Blackjack, Frosty: The Adventures of a Morgan Horse, was selected as a Children’s Choices winner.
