A Breyer Model Horse

Did you know that the real-life star of author Ellen Feld’s “Morgan Horse Series,” Blackjack, was made into a Breyer Model Horse? How cool is that?!

Breyer Model Horses is known in the horse world as the premier model horse maker. Their models have been popular since back in the 1950s(!), and they continue to charm children as well as serious adult collectors.

Back in 2007, Breyer approached Willow Bend Publishing to discuss the possibility of making a model of Blackjack and selling it with a copy of his award-winning book. (See our previous blog post to learn about the award.) Long story short, a model was made, packaged with Blackjack: Dreaming of a Morgan Horse, and sold nationally.

Following the release of the model, Blackjack and author Ellen Feld headed to Lexington, KY, to participate in BreyerFest, an annual celebration bringing collectors and fans of Breyer’s models together. Blackjack even received his own special BreyerFest blanket, in the traditional blue and yellow Breyer colors.

After BreyerFest, Blackjack traveled to several other equine events, including both the Massachusetts and Ohio Equine Affairs, and Everything Equine in Vermont, to meet young fans and share his book with them.

To date, Blackjack stars in three of Willow Bend’s books: Blackjack: Dreaming of a Morgan Horse, Blackjack: The Champion Morgan Horse, and Blackjack: The Magical Morgan Horse. Check them out and get your young horse lover reading this summer!
