Baby Horse: A Foal’s First Year

Are you looking for the perfect stocking stuffer for a young horse lover? Do we have the perfect book for you!

Baby Horse: A Foal’s First Year follows my horse “Baby” as she grows from a newborn through her first birthday. In the book, Baby is called Bella because I think many readers would find it odd that the foal’s name is Baby. I guess I have a habit of naming my foals unusual names (my Appaloosa was named Spot). Anyway, four years later, Baby is still called Baby.

Back to the book - written for children ages five and up, Baby Horse follows Bella from her first day all the way through her first birthday. Readers will learn how quickly foals learn to walk, and run, when the vet comes, what she does when she visits, and how to teach a young horse how to be led around with a halter and lead rope. Bella also gets a visit from the dentist, has her first haircut, and even gets a visit from the farrier (blacksmith). The text is simple, with just one or two sentences per two-page spread, along with numerous short “factoids” to help explain some of the things Bella is learning. Accompanying the story are over forty beautiful photographs taken by wildlife photographer John Cebula.
